Back to all Alaska or Bust!

We made the drive from the Homer Spit to Valdez in one day. 530 miles! It was a beautiful drive, of course. Along the way, we visited a Russion community and a little Alaskan fishing village with a really cool church. The area along the Russian River was crowded with fisherman as the Salmon were running.

We found the most special bears in Valdez. The very best was a Mama and her bear cub who tried and tried, but could not catch himself a fish. Mama bear kept catching and giving them to him. At one point, he stood up and actually gave her a hug. It was so special. We were able to watch from the highway bridge directly above them which was amazing.

The salmon "running" was a little disturbing for us. I know it is nature at her best, but it was total chaos and there were so many! It was easy picking for the bears each night.

The old town Valdez site was in the beautiful bay, but quiet and sad. They moved the entire town a few miles away after the '64 earthquake, so all is well now. We really enjoyed the local museums with all of the history. It is a very special place. There was a lone eagle standing guard. We were able to drive right out onto the beach and get some great pictures.

Again, the Valdez area has beautiful glaciers canyons, and just more of breathtaking Alaska!
